Metal weight and section calculator

Use this metal weight calculator to estimate the weight of common metal profiles, tubes, structural sections and sheets. Start simply, then reveal standards, presets and cost details when you need them.

Choose a common profile and enter its basic dimensions.

1. Choose a metal profile

2. Enter plate / sheet details

Plate / sheet estimate · Mild Steel (MS)19.625 kg total

19.625 kg per piece · 1.000 m per piece · 19.625 kg/m

Length is converted to metres before calculation (1 ft = 0.3048 m; 1 mm = 0.001 m), for every profile including plate. Theoretical estimate using nominal density and simplified section geometry. Fillets, corner radii, rolling tolerances, thread profile and actual grade can change the final stock weight. Threaded rod uses a 0.78 area factor as an approximation for thread grooves, not an exact solid-bar weight. Channel and I-beam areas subtract corner/flange overlap. Confirm critical work against supplier data.

Built for different experience levels

Beginners can select a profile, enter dimensions and get a clear estimate. Intermediate users can add quantity, length and price. Experts can work with section references, presets and density control.

How the metal weight calculator works

The metal weight calculator uses cross-sectional area, length, quantity and nominal material density. Structural fillets, rolling tolerances, thread form and actual grade can change the final stock weight.
